I have always had an overactive imagination. Like my imagination would run me wild on most days. I don’t see the world in black and white. I don’t even see the world in a straight 7-colour rainbow spectrum. I see the world in all the little colors in between the rainbow colors once you combine them. My prism has so much variety, it sometimes scares even me.
In life, you always have a choice. You have the option of being ordinary and seeing things in black and white – or you have the option of coloring someone else’s world and enriching your own by pushing the envelope. Sometimes you even have a lot more than one choice.
Here’s what I’m learning. What happens between my ears (i,e, in my colorful world) is something nobody can take away. The outside world may try to influence it but it’s unto me to leave it as untainted as humanly possible. That’s my secret lab. That’s my place of birthing. That’s my inner sanctum. That’s my place of peace. That’s my happy place.
I refuse anyone to take that away and I refuse to let anyone change how I view things. My imagination is my place where I create happy thoughts, process sad thoughts, play my love songs and sing my sonnets. My imagination is my window into my tomorrow and my peephole out of my yesterday. My imagination is where I can grow and be whatever I want to be – and not worry about what the world thinks because in my imagination, I make the rules.
I’ve watched fearless people through caution to the winds, put aside societal norms and break every law of nature imaginable – and soar. Imagination is what caused the Wright Brothers to soar. Imagination is also what cause Cornelis Drebbel to navigate the first submarine. Imagination tells a little girl from Syria she can do it and gives Yusra Mardini the strength and willpower to pull a boat full of survivors for 3 hours as she swims for her own and their lives. Imagination cheered a young adopted Simone Biles into olympic history at the Rio games just this year.
A lot of education systems don’t enjoy imagination and feel that it is the enemy. I would beg to differ. Imagination is our best friend, biggest advantage and fastest route from today to tomorrow. So don’t think outside the box. Trash the box and live like the box never existed because in your world, you can be whoever you want to be and imagination will help you transition from the regular, every day today into a tomorrow where you grow up to change the world!
On this 15th day of our #31daysofwoohoo challenge, I want you to pick up a piece of paper and a pen. Then write down your best within and out of the box ideas. Next to them I want you to come up with solutions that don’t involve a box. Trash the box and start completely afresh – see where God will take you.
