Blessed in the City … and Blessed in the Field

By July 14, 2012Uncategorized

When I look around me, at my life, past present and especially future, I can’t help but think how blessed I am. The dictionary definition tells us that Blessed is an adjective [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/blessed?s=t&ld=1031] : a word that is used to describe a person, a place or a thing. It further goes on to give various definitions of the word:

  1. Consecrated; sacred; holy; sanctified.
  2. Worthy of adoration, reverence, or worship
  3. Divinely or supremely favored; fortunate: to be blessed with a strong, healthy body; blessed with an ability to find friends.
  4. Blissfully happy or contented.
  5. Roman Catholic Church . beatified.
  6. Bringing happiness and thankfulness: .

Of all these definitions, two strike a cord in my heart: I am BOTH blissfully happy or contented, AND my life brings me happiness and thankfulness. However, only one resonates in my soul: I am Divinely [AND] Supremely Favored; fortunate:one of the examples for this definition ; blessed with an ability to find friends. And that right there is why I’m here today.

I have always had the uncanny ability to meet strangers, start a conversation, laugh with them, and form a bond. For the most part, form a lasting bond. I have however, also had the pleasure and honor of forming loving, passionate ties that bind with my family. My mother, my sisters, my father, my brother: they say that you don’t get a chance to choose your family, but you have a choice in who you chose as your friends. I love that I am friends with my family. That we can sit and giggle and be silly together about things that really don’t matter. That I can always count on them to tell me the truth and tell it to me straight (even though I might have preferred the scenic detour to the highway they use). That no matter how much we may disagree on one thing or another, we will always still gravitate towards one another in more than ways than one. That we like to pass time with each other and spend a lot of time ‘just chilling’. I couldn’t have picked a crazier bunch of lovely crazies to be bound to and I wouldn’t have it any other way. You all are special in the most special sense of the word and I am BLESSED [Divinely or supremely favored; fortunate] to be a part of this family.

I was thinking the other day of another type of friendship. My mother comes from a large family – numerous sisters – and I have a unique relationship with each one of them. That to me is a blessing. I can glean from the wisdom of my mothers. There is no translation for the word Auntie into my vernacular so in my culture, I enjoy the privilege and honor of many mothers, each with her own sense of humor, each with her strong opinion, and each shedding a different ray into my life.

And yet there is a different type of blessing that I want to particularly celebrate today. The Bible says in the book of Deuteronomy 28:3 that you shall be blessed in the CITY and blessed in the FIELD. I chose to translate that as follows: The CITY is my hub – my home – the place I lay my head: The FIELD is my place of business, where I sow and reap, where I plant and harvest, my place of work. I have had the pleasure of working and living in various countries across continents. I have had the honor of meeting amazing men and women, and sitting at the feet of greatness. But I never in my life imagined what it meant to be this BLESSED [Divinely or supremely favored; fortunate] in the FIELD [my place of work, my place of purpose, my place of destiny, my place of assignment, where I am sowing so my children shall reap]. Like all work places, the pressure can sometimes be overwhelming, and we don’t always get along. We sometimes step on each others toes and we sometimes rub each other the wrong way. Still, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Some of you will read this, my fellow field-mates and to you I say … I can’t wait to see where this ride will take us. A wise man taught me something: In a Relationship, you meet someone and if your spirits connect (be it intentionally or divinely), you RELATE to them, jump into their SHIP and see where it ends up. Well, I know this is for a season, we won’t all be here forever, but for now, I enjoy RELATING with y’all and let’s see who’s SHIP I board and where it takes me.

And so it seems that this season is my season to celebrate and be celebrated. Today I celebrate a wacky, weird, and altogether wonderful group of people. Those I relate to in the FIELD. My colleagues. God brought us together onto this ship for a reason. We were created for such a time as this, and for as long as I’m on this SHIP, I will love what I do and do it to the best of my ability. Here’s to you all, my family at work, my MODE family [http://mo-de.co/]. I salute you!

Life is like a mug of Hot Chocolate on a COLD winter’s night. If you smile, it smiles back and warms you. If you frown it burns!
