Dear Younger Me,
First of all I would like to share the words to the song by Sidewalk Prophets with you. Be strong in the Lord and never give up hope, you’re going to do great things I already know. God has His hand on you so don’t live life in fear, forgive and forget but don’t forget why you’re here. Take your time and pray, these are the words I would say. It’s against this background that I would like to share a few nuggets of wisdom with you.
First of all, quit worrying about your body. You are beautiful, God created you a masterpiece. I know that sounds cliché but let me deliver you, you will never be skinny hunie. Those hips the good Lord gave you are not a result of food but genes. Enter rest already coz they aint going nowhere. Someday you will realize they are actually a blessing…especially when you’re a bringing another human into this world. No you’re never going to be of average anything, for Christ’s sake you’re 5’8” start accepting you and loving you. Oh and one other thing, you’ll be very many sizes in the years to come, pre-wedding day, post wedding, pre-motherhood… yes your body will transform faster than the cars in those transformers movies. Learn to love you and be anchored in your identity which is in God.
Secondly, I am pleased to inform you that you will not die of that broken heart. I know I know it feels like life as you know it will never be the same again, but tell you what…. In a few months it won’t even hurt as much and in a few years you won’t even remember why you were so hung up on him. In fact at some point you will wonder if you were intoxicated or demon possessed the entire time like yo! What was I thinking? Yap you will be just fine. No bitterness, no anger, no deep dark feelings, just an inner peace with where you will be and glad that that phase of your life is behind you.
Number three, that crush that makes you go silly every time? mmmmmhhmm its very interesting how you end up becoming friends. Yes friends and nothing more in fact, he becomes your go-to guy, the one you now tell about all your crushes. Would you believe that? So don’t fret, you won’t forget how to breathe when he finally talks to you, you won’t pass out, you will be very fine. It’s a funny story you will laugh about in the coming months.
Numero cuatro, you may want to pay more attention to the friends you have, like the values they uphold and not just how hyper and popular they are. As the years progress, you will have need for more depth than fun, you will want a friend who can stand with you in the rain even play and laugh with you in that rain! Your battalion of ‘friends’ will drastically decrease to only a handful, but worry not, that’s all you need, the rest were not really your friends anyway. You will also learn how to be a friend. You may find yourself inadequate but believe me, God has put something in you that there are people who will draw from. Let God use you and don’t hold back. Yes you are very private and sheltered, but don’t let that be an excuse to not minister to others because of your need to remain guarded and fortified. Only God can protect your heart, so give it to Him He knows what to do.
I will let you marinate on these few nuggets for now. I have a lot more to say but I don’t want to say it too quickly. Like I said at the beginning, you’re going to do great things, God has His hand on you. Don’t be afraid to live, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, you will not make a complete mess of your life. You will come out on top. You will outlive every mess and you will behold the beautiful tapestry that is you as God pieces things together. Next week I will shed some light on dating and stuffs… its fun, tears, laughter, mischief and all but ultimately, God prevailed! You can breathe a sigh of relief, it turns out well, very very well.
Until then my younger me, Live, love and laugh, stay out of trouble or at least attempt to try.
Ps: That youth camp you’re going for, pick the buffalo team…you will thank me for it! (wink)
