Saturday was a double blessing for my family. My daddy celebrated his 66th birthday. Those of you who know me know that of all my sisters, I am the daddy’s girl. My siblings are always teasing me about it and I enjoy the teasing. Today as I strive to fulfill my commitment to writing, to this blog, to you my audience and to myself, I want to take the time to celebrate all he is to me.
Papa, you have been my friend and safe place for as long as I can remember. You have been my harshest critique and loudest fan. You have steered me right when I wanted to go wrong and had forgiven as only a father can. You sheltered me from the big, bad wolves of this world as much as you could and with everything that is within your power built a utopia for me and my siblings.
From you, I have learned the true meaning of friendship as I watch you and mummy. From you I have learned loyalty towards those you love and passion towards that which you cannot live without.
You have pushed me when I felt like giving up and made me stop when I thought I needed to keep going.
A strong, proud, African man, you remind me of the hundred year old Baobab trees on the Mombasa – Kilifi road. Stoic and poised, exuding utter confidence and commanding the attention and respect of whoever dares cross your path.
Daddy all I have to say to you today is that I love you and you are the most amazing father a girl could have, and absolutely the rightest fit father that I could ever have asked for. If I could do it over again, I would choose you a thousand times over. As it says in the Bible, As The Days Of Your Life, So Shall Your Strength Be. Happy Birthday Papa … Here’s to celebrating 6 more decades with you.
